These vegan homemade hamburger buns are easy to make and require only 10 minutes of rising time! Top them with your favourite seeds (I used sesame but you could also leave them plain!) and enjoy with loads of toppings and a delicious patty such as my veggie black bean burger.
Prep time: 25 minutes
Bake time: 12 minutes
Servings: 6 hamburger buns
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tbsp active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp ground flax
- 3 tbsp water
- 2 cups white flour
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 1/2 tbsp plant milk (I used oat)
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Baking sheet
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- In a large bowl, mix together yeast, sugar and warm water (water shouldn’t be too hot, around 100-110F degrees). Let the yeast activate for 5 minutes, until it gets foamy.
- In a small bowl, prepare the flax “egg” by mixing together ground flax and 3 tbsp water. Let sit for a few minutes for the mixture to thicken.
- Once the yeast has activated, add flour, oil (I used olive oil but any oil works!), salt and flax egg. Mix well with a spoon then with your hands until it forms a dough. If the dough is a little too dry, add 1-2 tbsp of water, and if it feels a little too wet or sticky, add 1-2 tbsp of flour.
- Separate the dough into 6, then shape into balls and slightly flatten until each is about 1-1 1/2 inches thick. Add each to a lined baking sheet. Cover with a tea towel and let rise for about 10 minutes.
- Brush plant milk onto each bun then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the buns are golden on top.
- Enjoy these hamburger buns with my homemade veggie black bean burger patties or any patty of your choice!
