These easy DIY salt dough Christmas ornaments are the perfect kid-friendly craft to make this holiday season! The dough is made with only 3 ingredients (flour, salt and water) and baked for a couple hours. I like using fun cookie cutter shapes or even using a knife to carve different shapes. Afterwards, paint away and then seal with a waterbased sealant, add your string and ribbons, and hang on the tree! No need for store-bought ornaments when we can personalize them right from home!
Prep time: 20 minutes
Bake time: 1h30-2h
Servings: 20-30 ornaments (depending on size)
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup water
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Cookie cutters
- Lined baking sheet
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200F.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt and water (2:1:1 ratio, feel free to double if you want lots of ornaments!).
- Use your hands to knead into a dough ball.
- Add a bit of flour to the counter, then thinly roll out your dough (about 1/4 inch thick).
- Cut into different shapes, then add to a lined baking sheet and bake for 1.5-2 hours until firm. They don’t need to be rock hard but shouldn’t be squishy either.
- Let them cool before painting them. Once dry, you can add a bit of sealant and then some string & ribbon!
