Homemade Vegetable Dumplings

vegan homemade vegetable dumplings recipe

These homemade vegetable dumplings are made up of only a few ingredients, steamed, and served with a delicious sauce! I’ve used a filling made up of onion, carrot, mushroom and garlic, but it is completely customizable and you can sauté your favourite veggies for the filling. You can also choose to use homemade or store-bought wrappers for these dumplings.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Servings: 16 dumplings (approx.)

Ingredients

  • 1 yellow onion
  • 2 medium carrots
  • Handful of mushrooms
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (see notes for oil-free)
  • 16 dumpling wrappers (can be homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 green onion
  • Sesame seeds

Dumpling Sauce

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp sweet chili sauce
  • 1/2 tsp powdered garlic

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Pot
  • Steamer

Instructions

  1. If making dumpling wrappers from scratch, start by making those.
  2. Dice an onion, 2 carrots and mushrooms very finely (or alternatively, add to a food processor to chop finely). If you have any other veggies you’d like to add, such as zucchini, chop those as well (note: if you use extra veggies, you may have a few extra dumplings and need more dumpling wrappers).
  3. Heat olive oil in a frying pan on medium heat, then add onions, stirring occasionally.
  4. Mince garlic and add to the onions.
  5. Once the onions have turned a translucent colour, add the mushrooms and continue stirring occasionally. Once they have cooked down, add in the carrots.
  6. Remove the veggies from heat after about 5 minutes.
  7. Start assembling the dumplings by adding a bit of water around the edge (this will allow the wrapper to seal once closed). Then, add a heaping tsp of the veggie filling to the middle of the dumpling wrapper. Fold the wrapper halfway, sealing closed, then pull the corners backwards and push them together to form the dumpling.
  8. Repeat with all of the dumplings.
  9. To a large pot, add about 2 cm of water to the bottom and turn on medium-high heat. Add a steamer to the pot, then add in the dumplings and close the pot with a lid.
  10. Steam the dumplings for 10-15 minutes until the dumplings are cooked (the time may differ depending on the wrappers you use).
  11. While the dumplings are steaming, prepare the sauce in a bowl or jar by combining the soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, sweet chili sauce and garlic powder.
  12. Serve the dumplings with the sauce drizzled on top, chopped green onion and sesame seeds, and enjoy!

Notes

*For an oil-free version, fry the onions and veggies in a few tbsp of vegetable stock or water instead of oil.

*If adding extra veggies to the dumpling filling, you may need extra dumpling wrappers as it will likely make a few extra.

    1. Hi Susan! Thank you for your comment – and I’m so happy to hear you are enjoying my recipes! I am working on a print button, as I appreciate that printing a recipe is sometimes nicer than looking at it on the screen. I’m navigating through all the web development myself, so it’s taking a little longer than expected, but stay tuned 🙂
